Catastrophic Appeasement of Albanian Secessionists in Kosovo

Waking Up to Danger
The latest crisis in relations between former Soviet Republic of Georgia and Russia has brought to light the gravity of problems the international community would have to face throughout the world in case Serbian southern province of Kosovo and Metohija is cut off and handed over to Albanian secessionists. The proposed redrawing of borders and imposed carving up of the democratic and sovereign Serbia would most certainly trigger the chain of chaotic, impossible to control or prevent secessions around the world.
Radio Free Europe reports that EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana today acknowledged that Kosovo’s campaign for independence is worrisome as it would set a precedent for Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, among other problematic regions in the world:
BRUSSELS, October4, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana today acknowledged that Kosovo’s campaign for independence could set a precedent for Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Solana also said the European Union could not meet a request made by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili for peacekeepers, but that Brussels is actively trying to “build confidence” between Moscow and Tbilisi.
Solana told the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee in Brussels today that during a recent phone conversation, Saakashvili had confessed to “tremendous worry” about the possible consequences that ongoing UN-sponsored Kosovo status talks could have for Georgia.
“We Are All Trapped”
[...] Solana indicated that he, too, considers it possible that independence for Kosovo could have a negative effect on Georgia’s territorial integrity, acknowledging it would set a “precedent.”
“We are trapped here,” he said. “President Saakashvili is trapped, all of us are trapped in a double mechanism that may have good consequences for one, but not for the other. It may not be a win-win situation -- although we should be able to look [for] and find a win-win solution. But it will not be easy.”
Ahtisaari’s Proposal Postponed
Kosovo.net News reports that, for the first time, Martti Ahtisaari spoke about a postponement of the Kosovo solution, citing Serbian elections as the reason.
The proposal for the Kosovo status solution, which the chief envoy for the discussions is expected to give in November, will probably be postponed if Serbia announced extraordinary parliamentary elections for December of this year.
Ahtisaari told the Finnish television station ILE that his plan will have to wait for the results of the elections, which may be held in Serbia in December.
Yeah, right! How about everyone breathing down his neck, telling him things will not go quite as easy as he and the KLA thugs thought? How about Council of Europe scrapping the Johnstone’s resolution two days ago, the resolution that was to recommend the “conditional independence” for Kosovo? How about the Bush Administration reassessing its position on Kosovo? “Serbian elections” - give me a break! When did Adolfsen ever show he gives a rat’s ass over what Serbs think, say or do?! We have learned so far not to trust Ahtisaari’s one word, and it’s quite obvious the pressure must be immense for him to look for excuses and postpone his immoral, illegal and downright criminal “proposal.”
