CNN, AP: Russia Seals $2.2B Serbia Gas Deal

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- Serbia has signed a multibillion-dollar deal that would make it a key hub for Russian energy supplies and strengthen Moscow's dominance of the European energy market.

The agreement includes building a branch of a prospective major natural gas pipeline and a huge gas storage facility in Serbia.

A separate agreement also lays the groundwork for Russia's state gas monopoly, OAO Gazprom, to acquire a controlling stake in Serbia's state oil company NIS.

"The agreements signed would make Serbia a key hub in the prospective network of Russian energy supplies to southern Europe," Russian President Vladimir Putin said after Friday's signing.

"This network will be long-lasting, reliable, highly efficient and -- what is very important -- help boost energy supplies to Serbia and the entire European continent."

The agreements, which Serbian officials have estimated as worth at least $2.2 billion, would include building a branch of the prospective South Stream natural gas pipeline in Serbia.

South Stream would run under the Black Sea from Russia to Bulgaria, from where it would branch off. The section through Serbia would carry at least 10 billion cubic meters a year, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said.

The 550-mile, $15 billion project undercuts the prospective United States and EU-backed Nabucco pipeline designed to ease Europe's reliance on Russia by carrying gas from the Middle East and Caspian countries other than Russia via Turkey.

Isn't that Velimir Ilic (Minister of Infrastructure) shaking hands with Russian Minister Khristenko? If not, it sure looks like him :)

It just goes to show one shouldn't trust Reuters :-))

Corrected, thanks Vlad! (If the Russian minister hasn't been named properly either, someone please let me know)

HA HA HA HA HA!!! OPA! TO JE DIVNO!!!!! ZIVELA SRBIJA. now just to get that money into srbija herself and help the people. EU and USA lost out, they shouldnt have scewed srbija over! now you see. КОСОВО ЈЕ СРБИЈА.
СА ВЕРОМ У БОГА СЛОБОДА ИЛИ СМРТ.

This is a very positive development for Serbia. The European Union or America can in no way match this. This will help Serbia's economy greatly by creating quite a few jobs.

I say Serbia needs more Russian investment. Their historic ties with Russia are far more beneficial than joining the European Union or allowing American capitalists to invest in Serbia.

They should tell the West to go pound salt.

Don't be surprised if other eastern European countries follow suit.

i hope the money will not be abused by the serbian politicans. the serbian people have to control where the money goes.

This doesn't look good for SRS. Some analyst also said Putin have thrown his support behind Tadich in exchange for Gazprom bid in NIS?

Petar, I disagree with your assessment - things are not what they seem.

Tomislav Nikolic, who is openly supported by the Russian Duma, wrote a letter to President Putin days ago, begging him to sign this deal with Serbia, despite Tadic's stubborn push for Serbia's Western integrations. According to the news I read, Tadic's DS was fighting tooth-and-nail to squeeze their Leader into this delegation and have Tadic go to Moscow with Kostunica and Ilic, since he was not invited by the Russians.

Tadic's camp has greatly offended President Putin when they abused the fact Putin's cabinet, which takes care of presidential birthdays and similar things, has sent a common form congratulating Tadic's birthday, as Putin's "endorsement" of Tadic in Serbia's elections. A well-known diplomat has commented Tadic's faux-pas as a very dangerous kind of game and an extremely selfish gesture, which risks making Russian leadership turn its back on Serbia completely, "because Russians are very serious and they don't want to have any dealings with flimsy, superficial people that can't be trusted."

It is more than obvious Tadic is using the whole deal as his own self-promotion before the second round of elections. I sincerely hope Serbs will not be that stupid to buy his crap and take this charade seriously.

Svetlana, remarkable structures of disinformation was built, institutionalized, and remain parts of Serb society. Under these conditions it became relatively easy to promote propaganda, because after all who would counter it?

Tadich marked the beginning of the great schism within the Eastern Europe relations with Russia. I know Kremlin doesn't support Boris, but most people believe what they read.

latest propaganda onslaught [...]

Sorry, Petar, I had to remove the link you gave to Soros' b92. It is our policy not to allow any links to them. Internet links are a form of 'vote' for certain sites, that help bring up the rankings of the sites in question.

Besides, I'm sure that readers of this blog are very well aware of the StateDept/Soros' propaganda available throughout even the Western mainstream, but that's not what we choose to focus on here.

Thanks for understanding.

Sounds like Petar is ignorant( yeah, sure he is) of Soros paid-for propaganda by B92!!
