Armed Conflict Over Kosovo-Metohia

General Ivashov: Armed Conflict Over Serbian Province Probable

The illegal declaration by Pristina separatists may trigger armed fighting of Kosovo Serbs against the "current masters" of the Serbian province and NATO forces, assessed on Tuesday former chief of international military cooperation at the Russian Defense Ministry, and now president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems General Leonid Ivashov.

At the same time, the general did not rule out the arrival of volunteers from Russia and other CIS states to southern Serbian province.

"This situation will be conducive to an underground armed fighting on behalf of Serbs in Kosovo province and the rest of Serbia, as well as Montenegro and the Bosnian Serb Republic," against "the current masters of Kosovo and NATO forces deployed there, Americans in the first place," Ivashov was quoted as saying by Itar-Tass.

"There are many people in all countries ready to fight for justice, including armed fighting, and I think we in Russia have them too," the Russian general said.

Europe to Brace Up for a Headache

Ivashov assessed that further destabilization of the region is to be expected in the future, which would encompass FYR Macedonia, Greece, Serbia as such, Bosnia and the whole of the Balkans, and from there it will spill over to other parts of Europe.

Europe's head will ache from Kosovo-Metohia, where there is sweeping unemployment, with no tendencies towards economic growth, General Ivashov said.

He cautioned that Kosovo Serbs will be subjected to genocide and discrimination, with no opportunities to earn even for food. Serbs, according to Ivashov, will be deprived of political and other rights.

At a press conference in the RIA Novosti news agency on the topic "Situation in the Balkans: analysis and predictions," organized on the occasion of the second anniversary of the death of Slobodan Milosevic, the late Yugoslav president's brother spoke, former Yugoslav ambassador in Moscow Borislav Milosevic.

Comments

General Ivashov has long been a friend of the Serbs. Back in 1999 he openly argued with Victor Chernomyrdin about the pressure the latter was putting on the Serbs to end the war. He was probably more pro-Serb than Milosevic himself. In fact, if he had been in charge of the Russian government back in 1999, NATO would have been humbled and/or defeated.

I agree that armed conflict is the only way to solve the Kosovo problem. The illegal Kosovo government at some point will have to try to assert its authority over the Serbs. At that point the Serbs will have to resort to armed violence. There is no other alternative. Moreover, how much longer can the Serbian government tolerate the continued emasculation of Resolution 1244. Violence is inevitable.

It would not take much to drive NATO and the Americans out of Kosovo. The American military is broken. It is already involved in 2 wars and is losing both of them. The only strong point they have is their air force, which was ineffective and suffered serious losses in the last war. It would suffer the same fate in a future war. Militarily speaking, there is no good ending for NATO and America.

Stric...What you say makes good sense. The jihadists are not going to mellow. As long as they have asshole Bush in their hip pocket, they will continue pushing the Serbs with all the audacity that ignorant muslim bastards can muster. I seriously do not see that pattern changing short of extremely bitter experience on their part. When that comes to pass, I sincerely hope that islam will be totally swept off the european continent. Meantime, who is this clown Vuk Jeremic, Serb Foreign Minister, who is encouraging the jihadists to become more aggressive by grabbing his ankles with the announcement that there will be no Serb military action over Kosovo? Which political party is he from?

joesixpack and stric simo you are both correct we need to take Kosovo back by force it is the only answer!! Before we do so we need to get rid of the traitors standing in the way namely(Tadic) with any luck it wont be too long!!

I thought a coup was going to happen?

Where is the command of the military stand and what are they doing?

By force yes. They need to do this by sending in special forces into Kosovo little by little and conducting recon patrols, etc... to monitor NATO troop activity and strength and prepare hit and run tacticts to confuse NATO ground troops while the real force would sweep down from the north backed by some type of Russian force that was deployed in Serbia.

Russia could provide satellite imagery and intelligence on NATO forces in the region if not naval forces in the Adriatic. Russia could use its strategic nuclear forces as a deterance and this mission by the time NATO could figure this out, Serb/Russian forces would have seized control of northern Kosovo and push for a partition at the minumal. The Serbs are crafty in disguising and hiding military hardware, so this should be a snap.

NATO troops in Kosovo cannot attack Serbia unless they consult the UN Security Council, so legally they are sitting ducks.

Svetlana,

Kosovo’s self-proclaimed independence and its acceptance by many world powers is a definite precedent with possible consequences around the world.

In the near future, we may see escalation of conflict in the Basque region of Spain and parts of France, fighting for independent Kurdistan in Iraq and Turkey, problems in Romania, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, China, the whole African continent, and elsewhere. German Spiegel comments that “many countries fear that their separatist groups could choose to emulate developments in the Balkans.”

Another country that could expect a lot of uncertainty is Bosnia and Herzegovina. In December 1995, Bosnia ended its three-sided bloody war that lasted for almost four years. Since then, the country is formally divided into two, and informally into three ethnically homogeneous parts.

It is very possible that some ethnic groups in Bosnia could decide to follow Kosovo’s path and seek partition of the country. German newspaper Handelsblatt writes that “the West will have problems explaining why one is against Republika Srpska [Bosnian Serb entity in Bosnia] when Kosovo’s secession was deemed acceptable. Keeping the artificial state Bosnia and Herzegovina together against the will of the Bosnian Serbs will, in any case, be difficult.”

After Kosovo’s self-proclaimed independence received support around the world, it will be hard to say no to others who attempt the same.

Kosovo leaders call on UN, NATO to "restore order" in Serbian north

Pristina (dpa) - Kosovar Prime Minister Hashim Thaci on Friday asked the United Nations and NATO to impose order in the tense, Serb- dominated north of Kosovo. Thaci, with President Fatmir Sjediu, asked the UN administrator in Kosovo, Joachim Ruecker, to "urgently impose law and order" in the hotspot town Mitrovica.

The two Kosovo leaders were to meet the NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, scheduled to arrive later Friday for his first visit to Kosovo after the province declared independence.

Hours earlier, several hundred Kosovo Serbs broke through an international police cordon in the divided Mitrovica and broke into the UN municipal court building.

"There was a joint request ... that UN and NATO law-enforcing agencies urgently expel hooligans from the building," Thaci and Sejdiu said in a statement after meeting Ruecker.

Serbs, who dominate the northern section of the town and about a fifth of Kosovo's territory to the north of it, have been protesting daily since Pristina declared independence from Serbia a month ago.

The time has come to fight! Restoring order by the KLA commander will anger Serbia and Russia and steps will be made to protect Serbs in the north.
